    Synopsis:
A war has been raging between the Vampires and Lycan for centuries, Selene (Beckinsale) is a death dealer, assigned to hunt down and eradicate the last of the Lycan. When she comes across Michael Corvin(Speedman)who holds the key to end the war she must decide where her alligances will lie.

    Quotes:
About the killing of vampires and werewolves: "“We heal like vampires do. We don’t have a whole lot about garlic and crucifixes. We don’t have any of that. It’s much more high-tech than that. The werewolves kill with ultraviolet bullets that shoot daylight into us. I can jump from this great height and land. We don’t turn into bats. None of the stuff that kind of makes me feel a bit [creepy] about doing a vampire movie is really in it, which I was kind of glad about. We shoot the werewolves with silver nitrate bullets. It’s really just having a couple of big-ass Glocks."
About her latex suite: “The first thing that we shot was the subway, [where] there was no air conditioning. It was boiling hot in there. The outfit was out of latex, I think – the stuff they make condoms out of. If it’s hot, it gets really hot. If it’s cold, it gets really cold. And in Budapest it goes from [blazing hot to winter] in one day. It was kind of uncomfortable.”

    Trivia:
  • When Kate first took a look at the script for “Underworld,” she almost put it aside without considering it. “I got [the script] with a pile of scripts and this was one the top. It said vampires and werewolves and I said, ‘Oh God, I better put this to one side.’ Then I opened it up and the director had done these amazing drawings, he’s an incredible artist. They were really not what I was expecting.”
  • 'Selene', the heroine's name, is the Moon in Greek mythology.
  • After the underground station fight, the tunnels where Selene kills a Lycan is a champagne cellar.
  • The song used for the trailer is called "Red Tape" by Agent Provocateur.
  • There were no special effects used to alter Kevin Grevioux's (Raze's) voice. It actually gets that deep naturally.
  • According to writer/actor Kevin Grevioux, the model for the Selene character was the psychic vampire of the Hellfire Club in the X-Men comics, the Black Queen Selene.
  • A kiss between Michael and Selene (when she unchains him in Lucian's lab) appears in the trailer but was not included in the theatrical release or on the DVD, but it is on the unrated version of Underworld.
  • Kate Beckinsale first met future husband Len Wiseman on the set.
  • This movie marked Len Wiseman's feature film directorial debut.
  • The 'attack dogs' outside of the vampire mansion were actually very docile and playful canines, which were the only dogs available at the time. For the scene where they chase Scott Speedman, director Len Wiseman had to film short clips of the dogs running and later put in sounds of vicious barking. If you look closely though you can see their tails happily wagging back and forth.
  • The ancient tome which Selene uses to research the history of Kraven is a Latin prayerbook (with appropriately vampiric illustrations added). The first two pages visible onscreen contain the "Proper of the Second Mass for All Souls Day" and the second set are Psalms. The rest of the pages are shown too far from the camera to make out clearly.
  • Days before its US opening, the president of Screen Gems green lit not only a sequel to the movie Underworld but also a prequel after seeing the number of tickets sold in Canada alone.
  • At the start of the movie when Selene encounters a werewolf in the train tunnel, you hear a wolf howl - the sound effect is taken directly from An American Werewolf in London (1981).
  • Director Len Wiseman opted to shoot many of the action and effects sequences live, without computer imagery. In one scene a werewolf seems to run more than 50 mph behind a speeding car. The scene was shot using an elaborate rig towed behind a vehicle, with actor Michael Sheen doing the running.
  • The actors only had two weeks of wirework and prop training for the movie.
  • The movie was initially pitched as "Romeo and Juliet for vampires and werewolves".
